Well I just received a piece of black upholstery leather which I plan to use to cover the dirty red cloth door panel on my 2000 spyder. I have reviewed the tutorials and will soon be going to michaels hobby lobby to purchase a few exacto blades and some black leather cord. Dull butter knife in hand I hope to have the fresh smell of leather soon. If anyone wants to offer me some words of wisdom or some helpful tips I would certainly appreciate it. I won't get to it until next weekend because I am way too busy this weekend. Words of encouragement are welcome as well.

It was hard to get the cloth to glue tightly around the edges. I probably could do a quicker job if I tried again.

One question to the masses, did anyone try to just tear the hole darn thing off the door panel, put the leather on, then glue it back?

larry: What's the black cord for?

The way several have done it is to use the cord to wedge the material into the crack around the panel. No glue is used. You just work the material into the groove around the panel and cut the extra off when the material is secured. The panel is not a separate piece of the door so you can't remove it. At least this isnwhat inhave been told.

I used some 3M adhesive remover, after I removed the OEM fabric, to remove the foam that is behind the OEM fabric. I then sprayed the door with 3M adhesive and stuck my new fabric to the door. I used the leather cord around the edges to hold the edge down. Worked perfect.

Real leather

Yes I found a wholesaler who will cut a piece of leather to your order so you don't have to get an entire side. I have a beautiful soft piece of black pebble grain upholstery leather that cost 35 bucks including shipping. Springfield leather is the vender and they were helpful over the phone and perfectly fine with a small order. They will cut most leathers to order. They leather I have is a 3.5 oz. And I think a little thick for the panel but I have been messing around with it and I will be fine using the method midshipman02 used which entails cutting the leather to fit as you work your way around the panel. I still need to find the leather cord. If I were to order leather again I would get a 2.5 to 3 oz weight I think. Thinner would be easier I think. But I would definitely go with leather upholstery leather but I just like real leather. It is a personal preference I think.
