P0420 (am I on the right track?)

So for the last month I have been getting this CEL (although today I actually went to see what it was). Before I knew what it was i replaced the gas cap, MAF o-ring (and cleaned it), and thats about it.

I went ahead and searched the forums for what seems to be the most basic fix and I found equal amounts of different solutions. So first off let me explain my set up and what I have done. I have a Che header, downpipe (so no cat obviously), and megan racing exhaust. I replaced all 3 o2 sensors in december (same time as exhaust, except the header which was done last summer). The o2 sensor on the downpipe is one of the spliceable kind from autozone. I spliced it with there splice kit (so all the wires are in a little gray box). Like I said everything has worked fine up until now. When I pull the o2 sensors out however, they all have a layer of white on them (not sure if that is normal)? Also on my downpipe I am using the o2 simulator that comes with ches downpipe + 2 sparkplug antifoulers. The reason for this, is on my last setup I used nothing but 3 sparkplug antifoulers (Thats how many it took to stop the light from coming back on, and it has worked fine since last december).

The second fix was exhaust leaks. I have all of my heat shields on so this is kind of hard to go out and test right now. However I will admit that my only real toyota gasket used was on my header. The 2 donut gaskets and the gasket from the downpipe to exhaust is all Ches and megan racing's. Before I put my heatshields back on (at most 2 months ago) the downpipe to exhaust was leak free (same with header to head I believe). I did however have a very very small leak from the header to downpipe which I used some exhaust paste to fix. Would this somehow cause the code to be thrown?

I will also throw in, I have the innovative mounts so I dont think much of the exhaust has moved much

I have the exact set up Che header, DP w/bung + one bung (with little hole) from the help section at Advanced Auto & Megan exhaust. I do have an OEM header gasket, donut gaskets and the Megan squish gasket (+ a
2 1/2 inch gasket the squish sits on between the DP & Megan. And the 85A innovative mounts, my engine barely moves at all. Hopes this helps, good luck...

A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Possible Solutions

Some suggested steps for troubleshooting a P0420 code include:
 • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
 • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
 • Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
 • Replace the catalytic converter

from the BGB for P0420, causes include:

Gas leakage on exhaust system
Heated oxygen sensor
Three-way catalytic converter

The book goes on to say that if there are no other codes, the first thing to check is for exhaust leaks.

ugh, I may have an exhaust leak  . I just went outside and took out one of my spark plug antifoulers and then I drilled the little hole on the other one to make it a tad bigger. Now I have the o2 simulator and the sparkplug antifouler with a little bigger hole. If this doesnt help then I will move on to gaskets. If those dont help then I am taking my light bulb out and buying a cel reader to check my car every so often for other codes. (In case this bothers anyone, I have no intention on selling my car. It is all paid off and I have done to much work to sell it and not lose a ton of money)

So can anyone explain how big of an exhaust leak will cause this code to show up? Also someone told me that since ethanol is being used more and more in gasoline I should probably use a higher octane (Ive been using 87)

For the love me, I can not figure out how to do that.

thats what im saying.
